WORKING PRINCIPLE
WEBER AQUA STANDARD XL 30 water softeners can be used for two basic purposes, i.e. for comprehensive softening of the water supply in a building or for local softening, directly in front of equipment requiring water with high softness, e.g. steam generators, industrial dishwashers, etc.
In the case of comprehensive water softening in a building, the unit is installed at the point of water supply to the facility. In such a solution, water entering the building first flows through a pre-filter that removes sediment and mechanical impurities from the water. The water then enters the softener, where it is softened by an ion exchange resin bed. Water softening is a process in which calcium and magnesium ions, responsible for excessive water hardness, are exchanged by the active resin bed for sodium ions, the salts of which are well soluble in water and, moreover, neutral for human health. The water thus softened flows into the plant, where it can be used for any purpose.
The high and time-constant efficiency is constantly monitored by a sophisticated control and automation system, which carries out the regeneration process of the ion exchange bed after the appropriate amount of water has been consumed. Regeneration takes place in several stages:
- In the first, the ion exchange bed tank is flushed with mains water. The mains water flows through the bed, flushes and fluffs it up at the same time, and then discharges it into the sewer system.
- In the second stage, brine from the salt container is directed into the ion exchange bed. The brine flows through the bed, regenerating its ion exchange capacity, and is then discharged into the sewage system.
- In the third stage, mains water is fed into the brine tank to supplement the brine necessary for the next regeneration. A control system, a float valve and a drain valve ensure the correct level of supplied water.
- In the fourth stage, a small amount of water is circulated through the ion exchange bed to flush out excess brine and to stabilise and properly lay down the bed. This water, after flowing through the bed, is discharged into the sewage system. After this stage, the unit automatically switches to operation mode
Despite the fact that softener heads have several different methods of setting the cyclicity of bed regeneration start-up, the most recommended by the manufacturer and factory-set in the appliance is regeneration in volume-delayed mode. This means that the controller of the appliance first counts the quantity of water that has been softened. After a certain amount of water has been consumed, the controller starts the regeneration mode but with a delay, i.e. only at a specific time, entered at the first start-up by the user.
To ensure adequate efficiency, cyclic refilling of the salt in the brine tank is required. A single dose usually does not exceed 25 kilograms, and the periodicity of its replacement depends on the amount of water used.
MAIN COMPONENTS
The softener head is the control and automation unit located at the top of the unit. This component is responsible for the efficient management of the operation of the entire softener. The head has factory settings adapted to most applications and does not require adjustments, with the exception of entering the hardness of the water in the network before softening before the first start-up and entering the regeneration time that best suits the user.
The head automatically manages the individual operation and regeneration cycles.
The housing, made of stable and aesthetically pleasing plastic, acts as a non-pressurised tank for salt and brine. The head is located in the upper part of the housing. In addition, it houses the ion exchange reservoir and a float that controls the brine level and protects the housing from overfilling. An overflow valve is located in the side wall of the housing. The housing has a large opening for refilling salt.
The bed tank is a pressurised unit filled with ion-exchange resin at the factory. It is in this element that the softening process takes place. The life span of the resin is determined to be approximately 10 years. After this period, it is possible to replace the resin with a new one without any loss of efficiency. The tank is connected to the softener head.
The bypass is an element that performs several important functions in the operation of softeners. This element enables efficient connection or disconnection of the softener from the existing installation. In addition, it provides the ability to set the form of water flow from the mains, i.e. through the unit in softening mode or bypassing the unit. Some versions of Bypasses have the possibility of mixing raw water with softened water, however, due to the reduction in the life of the appliance's automation, this solution is not recommended by the manufacturer.
